"When I was growing up, my grandmother loved braiding my hair. Every time she came to visit from Korea, she brought cute hair ties and accessories. When I think back on that time, I can still feel the tight pulling sensation on my scalp as she made sure each strand of hair was precisely situated on my head.
While braiding my hair, she told me that when she was growing up in Korea, the school did not allow young girls to grow their hair out past their shoulders. Before the Japanese occupied Korea, however, braids represented filial piety, and the way in which a woman styled her braids disclosed her marital status. It's interesting to think that an aesthetic choice could bear so much meaning."
